Fundamentals on bird nest building technology

I. Survey the location, background area and make investment plan.

1. First of all, we have to thoroughly survey the location and the area where the birds nest and seek for the food as well as the flying routes of the birds (very important). It should not be a perfunctory research, but an intensive survey.

2. After surveying intensively and choosing ideal location, we will make investment decisions for the bird tam-cao-viet. Making investment on large or small scale depends on the big number or small number of birds available in that area. Each room and each floor of the bird farm must be thoroughly designed suit the bird’s living condition. The bird’s entrance holes and the glide should be studied carefully and designed reasonably.

3. Researching and consulting before making the building decisions are extremely important. Do not ignore any small factors on any steps.

4. Temperature and humidity of each region may vary; therefore, the design must depend on the specific conditions of each region. For example, if the temperature of the region is from 28 to 30 Celsius degrees, the choice of materials and design will vary accordingly.

5. Temperature, humidity and indoor atmosphere of the bird nest must be taken into serious consideration. The ventilation system and design should vary on each floor to create the most comfortable environment for swiftlet.

Note: To ensure the technology on building bird nest, it’s advised that the temperature and humidity be not at the same rate. Humidity increasing will affect the ideal temperature, causing the nest to be wet and mold. We should focus on the temperature.

6. Is the location and surroundings ideal? Are there any risks on preserving and protecting the nest?

For example: human or the surroundings, especially dangerous species such as rats, cockroaches, ants, owls, snakes, etc. are dangerous enemies to the birds nest.

Conclusion: When making a big scaled bird farm, it is suggested to choose the ideal location with full survey of living condition, habitat of birds nest, the number of birds and food resources of that region. On building procedure, each detail should be closely paid attention to and designed suitably.  The model should not be copied from this region to other regions; therefore, consultancy on technology of the building is essential and important for building any bird nest.

II. Important things to be noticed in building a bird nest in different regions.

1. Building structures in different region:

- Temperature must be consistent in the range from 27 to 28 Celsius degrees.

- All design details must suit each area and each region. The nest frame bars are designed with different thickness accordingly.

For example: if the bar was 20 cm wide, we arrange them sparsely. If the bar is 15cm wide, we arrange them more closely. It can be seen from reality that the ideal size of the nest’s bar is from 30 to 40cm wide, from 90 to 100cm long. This size will help create the better living condition for bird and better productivity for bird house owner (which has been proved in reality)

2. Lightening system and air vents.

Adequate lighting: be dim, neither too light nor too dark

Indoor air circulation must be reasonable. Vents should be covered to prevent bird’s enemies from getting into the nest.

Lighting and ventilation of downstairs and the upstairs must be different, not stereotypes.

Basing on the real experience of some countries in raising swiftlet (Malaysia, Indonesia, especially Indonesia), vents in the shape of round holes with mesh outer cover are ideal for the swiftlet model in Vietnam.

Vents designed in Malaysia are square holes with the concave outer, which, in the long run, will easily attract the dangerous enemy of the birds, such as cockroaches, centipedes, snakes, etc.

III. Bird ideal tam-cao-viet

The campus outside the bird’s tam-cao-viet should be wide and spacious with a lot of green trees for insect (bird’s food).

No trees higher than bird’s holes.

Wide floor area (ideal is 300m2/floor - 12x25) so that swiftlet can glide easily and bring about a very high yield.

The location should be near the river or any water sources. Particularly, the spray machine should be set up.

The distance of the slab vents between the upper floor and lower floor is 40 cm

1. The size of entrance hole depends on the area of the house: (30x20 cm) - (60x40 cm) (80x40 cm), etc.

2. The distance of the nest bars and how to fix the bar: the ideal distance (30x90) cm or (30x100) cm (depending on the size of wood). For example, a 20cm wide bar will be put into (30 x 90) cm. When putting the frame, it is essential to calculate the thickness and the width of wood frame bar.

3. Currently, there are a big number of bird houses building without framing the bars; however, basing on real experience, the experts suggest that we should follow the frame as introduced above to maximize the number of birds.

4. Wood used to make frame bars is also important. Should not use low quality timber such as mango wood, guava wood, eucalyptus, melaleuca pile, etc. Only use dedicated wood for nest bar.
